TL;TD: get the pre-rolled monster hp sheet and start and track fights a bit faster.
I used to roll up monster HP during play, writing down their HP/HD on my log, and keep track of it during fights. It is slow, and in those moments right before a fight, rolling dices than don’t have any imediate effect, isn’t fun for anyone. My next approach was to wait for the first hit and damage, roll up the monster HPs and, if not killed, note in in my log and track it.
In my eternal strive against cognitive load, I started rolling up generic monsters HPs before session. It looks a bit like this:

That way, a fight can start right away. I note down the monster name and its Hit Dices, and can check off it’s damage. If the damage taken exeeds it’s HD, the monste ris done for. It really helps me keep things flowing if I referee for larger groups of 7 to 13 people.
I wrote a python scrip to help me create pre-rolled sheets of monster HP/HD. You can also grab the editable odt file.
